The majority of the members of the Norwegian Humanist Association are students, teachers, health and social workers and university teachers. But according to a questionnaire there are members from all layers of society - farmers and factory workers, as well as bankers and politicians.
Children cannot be members of the Norwegian Humanist Association. You have to be 15 years old to register as a member.
The Norwegian Humanist Association is most strongly represented in the Oslo area and weakest on the Northwest coast. But members of the Norwegian Humanist Association come from all over the country. Our 140 county and local subdivisions ensure that members will always find a local organization close to their home.
The Norwegian Humanist Association is the largest group outside the State Church. The number of members has grown considerably since the seventies and today count over 78,000.

Financial support
The yearly membership fee for fully employed people is NOK 350,-. Persons with a reduced income pay NOK 50,-. Household members above the age of fifteen also pay the lower rate.
Religious communities outside the State Church are subsidized by the state and the municipalities with an annual sum per member corresponding to the sum granted to the State Church, proportional to the number of its members. Since 1981 the Norwegian Humanist Association is regarded as equal to religious communities in this respect.
Registered religious communities count the children of their members as members for official purposes. In order to avoid discrimination against the Norwegian Humanist Association, official support is granted to the association for those children of members who actively have been registered. We strongly recommend that parents discuss such registration with their children beforehand, especially if the child is over twelve years old. At the age of fifteen, when - according to Norwegian law - they have the right to determine their own religious or philosophical allegiance they will be automatically removed from the register.
