HAMU (Humanist Action for Human Rights) is part of the Norwegian Humanist Association and works to promote international development and human rights. HAMU has been active for more than 15 years and funds projects in India, Nepal, Uganda, Brazil and the Dominican Republic.
HAMU aims to promote human rights for the oppressed and to aid fellow humans to a dignified life. We have a particular focus on oppression rooted in religion or tradition. HAMU also targets social degradation resulting from cultural prejudice, lack of education or superstition.
HAMU operates by supporting local humanist or secular, non-profit and non-governmental organisations in the South. HAMU does not have its own employees overseas, but aim to enable local organisations in the South to design and implement their own development projects.
Human dignity, diversity of visions, pluralism and democracy are values guiding this work. All projects must document gender awareness and a committment to central humanist values as expressed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In 2010 HAMU is giving priority to projects focusing on witchcraft and superstition, Dalits/untouchables, women and children, sexual minorities, and women's reproductive rights.
